Recently, the Justice Department put a hold to the Kindle on certain campuses. There are a few university/colleges who were sued by some organizations representing the blind, which alleged that while the Kindle has a text-to-speech function, the Kindle menus do not. Hence, makes it impossible for blind students to use!
Let this be a prime example that when we’re designing products (software, hardware, services) you need to make sure you understand the addressable market and associated regulations. Whenever you launch a product and try to target specific market segments, you need to also be aware of all other market segments that can become your target indirectly. Sometimes we all get excited (rightfully so) about the products we’re designing and the “coolness” factor of our gadgets, but we tend to forget how to ensure we meet the complete market needs.
